General English helps students develop their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills with a focus on communicative English.
Students have the opportunity to develop language skills as well as strategies for learning and using English in a range of contexts (e.g. work, holidays).
Our levels are:
- Elementary
- Pre-intermediate
- Intermediate
- Upper-intermediate
- Advanced
Classes start every Monday (Morning, Afternoon or Evening).
Depending on your requirements, classes can be five to 50 weeks. General English classes start on Mondays (except during Easter or Christmas).
International students studying General English must be on a tourist, working holiday or student visa, and class attendance is closely monitored as per the Attendance Policy for ELICOS Programs.
A minimum of 80% attendance is
required (for student visa holders).

General English Program (Elementary to Advanced)
This course has been designed for international students from non-English speaking backgrounds seeking to improve their general English language skills. The course focuses on developing students’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills for personal, social, work and study needs.
Assessment Methods
Assessment is continuous, focusing on all four English language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are given a proficiency rating on completion of their period of study.
English entry requirements:
All language learners are enrolled according to the outcome of a placement test for the purpose of establishing the appropriate level of class for them to commence their study.
- All students must be aged 18 years.
- There are no specific education requirements for this course
Our General English course is split into 5 levels: Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced levels. Our course is focused on the most important skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening. You will undertake a wide variety of tasks related to these skills and their use in “real life” situations.
Assessment will vary every week and may include reading or writing or listening or speaking tests, oral presentations, role plays, writing summaries, writing dialogues etc.

A minimum of 50% or greater must be achieved in assessments to demonstrate satisfactory course progress (for student visa holders).

Learning Outcomes
This course aims to develop students’ general English language skills and confidence in using English within a broad range of contexts when living, studying or working in an English speaking environment.
Study Pathway and Career Opportunities
Students undertaking the course may use the course to prepare themselves for further study in the Australian VET sector or higher education or to improve their English language skills for work /life in Australia or back in their home countries.
